I came to be a photographer in a round-about way. As a foreign language student, I was preparing to spend my junior year in college in France. I purchased my first 35mm camera, a rangefinder with a fixed lens, the weekend prior to my departure. I didn’t know how to use the camera so I joined a camera club in the Normandy town where I lived. I was thrilled to see my images emerge as prints in the darkroom. My vision had come to light. My passion for photography was sparked and has continued to this day.
My desire to learn my craft led me to study with some of the best photographers of our time - Ernst Haas, Jay Maisel and Arnold Newman. My exposure to their teachings and their images made be that much better at seeing the world and having the ability to capture it. I more keenly noticed color, lighting, composition, texture and gesture. I began to notice details that others would miss. I learned to appreciate on a deeper level the natural beauty found in this world.
My photos have gone on to win many awards. Photography led me to a career in advertising and public relations. I became a writer and then editor to pen articles that accompanied my photography. I am grateful for all the experiences that photography has allowed me - meeting top entertainers, authors, and business titans, documenting Olympic athletes, witnessing historical events, traveling to far off lands (in one case by invitation of the Chinese government) and even getting a close-up view to presidents of the United States.
In my personal time, I have experimented with my images and have created original art with the help of computer software. Producing these images lets my imagination soar.
While being sheltered-in-place when the Covid-19 pandemic spread worldwide, I began to review my images from the past and created new graphic designs. The latter reflected my varying moods and visually described what was happening globally with this outbreak. I had more time to sit and experiment, rather than dashing off on assignments and outside activities. I also had time to put this website together, so that I could share some of my images with you. My hope is that they will continue to provide pleasure to you and your family, friends and colleagues by being displayed in your home or at your workplace.
My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.
My inspiration comes from my mother, who was an artist, and from my world-class teachers who exposed me to their outstanding images. In addition, I am inspired by the interchange of images, techniques and discussion in my photo group which meets regularly.
My images may start with my camera, but are transformed to my vision in the computer. I can add lighting and shadow, change the hue, saturate or mute the color and create special effects with software.
I build my graphic images through layering and blending, as well as montaging and collaging.
Career highlights include winning the Kodak Daily News competition when I was just out of college.
Having my work chosen for the prestigious Communication Arts and Graphic photo annuals certified the quality of my photography.
Helping to organize and produce the "24 Hours in Chicago" project in which 87 photographers documented the City over a 24 hour period and produced a traveling exhibit and calendar which raised funds for my not-for-profit arts group gave me much satisfaction. For this same group, I initiated their first international digital competition which attracted participants from 16 countries and also raised badly needed funds.
I was pleased and proud that the City of Chicago invited me to do a 25 year retrospective of my photography of Chicago which was exhibited in the downtown Civic Center. I also was thrilled to be invited by the Chinese government, as one of ten American photographers to document the city of Rizhao..
